Old SD footage was displayed in 4:3 format, and the commonly used widescreen format for videos and television is. I use a 21:9 (3440x1440) monitor and Im absolutely fine with my stream being letterbox. If I'm exporting a 4:3 aspect ratio into a 16:9 aspect ratio, it will usually just show a pair of 2:9 black columns on either side, like this: 16:9 refers to the aspect ratio of the frame.
